The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation Announces the 2026 Imagine a Canada Honourees

Treaty 1 Territory, Winnipeg, MB, June 5, 2026 – The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) brings together students from across the country to share their visions for a reconciled Canada. These young people are being honoured for their exceptional Imagine a Canada projects, the national arts and leadership program that asks students to envision a reconciled Canada by either creating a piece of artwork or planning a community project. More than 50 young people are being honoured for their exceptional Imagine a Canada projects, the national arts and leadership program that asks students to envision a reconciled Canada by either creating a piece of artwork or planning a community project. Honourees, ranging from Grade 2 to Grade 12, will spend the day discussing how they can work towards reconciliation with Survivors, Elders, and other students.

While working on their Imagine a Canada projects, students are encouraged to learn more about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, consider how the history of residential schools continues to impact the present, and ask themselves how they can contribute to a reconciled Canada.

“I’m always inspired by the vision these students have for our country and their ideas for how to achieve reconciliation. Imagine a Canada lets students know they have the power to shape their future and gives them the experience they need to become lifelong changemakers. This program encourages students not only to learn more about truth and reconciliation but also how they can play a role in their own communities,” said Kaila Johnston, NCTR’s Director of Education and Public Programming.

This year, 12 art and essay submissions and 13 project submissions are being honoured for their creativity and insight. Some of the submissions this year include planting a community medicine garden; photography exploring Indigenous identity; and planning a land-based learning day led by a Knowledge Keeper.

The 2026 honourees will be recognized at the Imagine a Canada National Celebration and Gathering on June 5th at FortWhyte Alive, where families, dignitaries, and special guests, will learn about the projects and their visions for reconciliation.

The NCTR invites all Canadians to visit our website to learn more about the Imagine a Canada program and the inspiring work of the 2026 honourees.
